Deficit of 3% by 2012 is Ambitious: Skrzypek

Reducing the budget deficit to 3% of GDP by 2012, a goal the government is expected to set itself in an updated euro convergence plan, is an “exceptionally ambitious goal,” central bank chief Sławomir Skrzypek said Wednesday.
“If we are faced with a deficit of some 7% [in 2009], slightly lower in 2010 and ranging from 6 to 7% in 2011, when will we reach the 3% that we should meet in 2012?” Skrzypek told reporters.
“Adjustment from 6 to 3% within one year is an exceptionally ambitious objective.”

An update to Poland’s euro convergence plan, which the government is expected to adopt this week, forecasts that the economy will grow 3.4% in 2010, 4.5% in 2011 and 4.2% in 2012, the TVN CNBC broadcaster reported.
