Microsoft Technology Summit 2009 in Warsaw – Subjective Summary

Posted October 1st, 2009 in Developers by Marcin Stawarz

That’s it. Another MTS has just finished. PGS Software S.A. employees have attended this conference from the very beginning i.e. 2006.Of course we haven’t been sitting on the conference since 2006. We have to work, you know…

I think we can summarize the conference now. In further posts I will let you know what news can you expect and, most important, what news you should be keen on.

Here is the conference site: www.mts2009.pl (warrning – it is in Polish). It took place in PKiN in Warsaw, in one of most famous buildings in our country (http://www.pkin.pl). Yes, I know it is ugly :), but big enough to hold 3000 developers and IT Managers.

I have to admit that MS conferences are always more or less well organised and there are only two things, that I can complain about:

  • Catering areas too small for so many people – it is not very big pleasure to see all those developers sitting on the floor, eating using plastic forks. Fun. We had to go outside and find something more quiet i.e. shopping mall nearby ;-)
  • The guy who was explaining everything through speakers that were everywhere. So nice to hear 100 times, that on my card I have all information I need. Arhg! So annoying.

All above is not very important taking into account that this was IT conference and that we went there to learn something new. So, was it worth to go there? The answer, unfortunately, is always the same: I do not know. What I expect to find on such conference are news, information about future, about new products. And it all was there. But apart from that there were also boring classes, presenting technologies on the level that made me feel offended.

In next posts I will write more about conference itself, about Azure, VS 2010, Windows Mobile 6.5, ASP.NET 4.0. MS Surface, Windows 7 which are, I think, the most important for us, developers.

Windows 7 is the last on the list but first to be described. Don’t worry I will not title next post “Seven thing you will like in Windows 7″ – like everybody else. I would like to show things that I like and which are not “the most important” thing in new OS.

We were also informed that Microsoft has spend 9.5b$ for research labs and that it is I thing the only increased area of expenses. I have to admit that it makes good impression. They also claim that they have Vision – good or bad – judge yourself after you watch this propaganda movie:
