Steep rise in gas consumption

Extremely low temperatures in Poland have seen an increase in the consumption of gas twofold, says the Oil and Gas Company PGNiG.
Within the last couple of days, gas consumption has risen by 10 million cubic meters per day, reaching 65 million cubic meters in total, company spokesperson Joanna Zakrzewska told Polskie Radio.
“Only a week ago we were using about 10 million cubic meters of stored gas per day, […] we hope that this is a momentary change in the weather and we have enough to supply everyone with gas.”
Former economy minister Janusz Steinhoff believes gas supplies are unlikely to run out for private customers. But if consumption is too high, and Poland fails to sign a new deal with Russia, this would then translate into limited gas supplies for industries.
The gas storage facilities are half-full, currently holding 800 million cubic meters of gas.
